Philip Deignan is an Irish professional cyclist with Team Radioshack. He is a native of Letterkenny in County Donegal. His interest in cycling began when he entered at charity cycling event in his hometown when he was 14 years of age. He joined the local Four Masters Cycling Club soon after and with his all round abilities quickly established himself as one of Ireland’s leading cyclists. He joined the French based VC LA Pomme Marseille club in 2004 and after a string of impressive performances, most notably at the Under 26 Giro d’Italia (Baby Giro), turned professional in 2005 with the AG2R team and joined the Cervélo Test Team in 2008 and Radioshack in 2010. He specialises in climbing and has achieved top ten finishes in mountain stages in the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. He joined US professional cycling squad Team Radioshack in 2010 and has set his sights on developing his talent as a stage race and Grand Tour rider. Philip has represented Ireland at all levels internationally and finished 81st in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Road Race. He has also been selected by the Irish Sports Council for its International Carding Scheme having been identified as one of Ireland’s most promising high performance athletes. |
